In today’s day and age, there are numerous pain relief options available outside of what is considered “traditional medicine.” Specifically, the positive effects of CBD -- or cannabidiol -- on chronic pain are a renowned, safe alternative to potentially harmful traditional pain medicine. The following information sheds light on the intricacies of chronic pain and the ways that CBD can prove a beneficial option for chronic pain relief.
Although unpleasant, pain is an unavoidable part of life. Of course, pain is disagreeable by nature, but it serves a crucial purpose: to warn us against dangers that could cause irreparable damage. From a young age, we learn that touching a hot stove can result in a startling burn, which leads us to be more cautious in the future. In an ideal world, painful injuries like a burned finger heal in a matter of days or weeks, leaving us only with a cautionary memory.
However, when the pain of an injury won’t seem to go away and starts to interfere with your daily life, it may be time to consider whether you are dealing with chronic pain. The Institute for Chronic Pain defines chronic pain as “pain that occurs in addition to the pain of the existing health condition” and has “become independent of the underlying injury or illness that started it all.” The Institute also specifies that chronic pain typically lasts for more than 6 months. Simply put, in addition to the pain of the first injury, chronic pain takes on a life of its own and lingers for extended periods of time, causing a person ongoing discomfort that can stick around for months or years.
While it may seem logical to think of chronic pain as a continuation of the acute pain caused by one’s original injury, this is not the case. It is essential to remember that chronic pain takes on its own level of pain above and beyond the first injury, which can make it even more difficult to treat. Chronic pain is linked to the nervous system, which is responsible for alerting our brains of injury and subsequent pain. When we sustain an injury, our nervous system goes into “alert mode” to react appropriately to harm. Once the worst is over, our nervous system should go back to normal, prepared to react again in case anything happens. However, instead of going back to “normal,” sometimes the nervous system can get stuck in alert mode, with a highly sensitive reactivity that results in amplified chronic pain.
The comprehensive impact of chronic pain on a person cannot be fully measured, as it can permeate all aspects of one’s life. When chronic pain comes into the picture, something as simple as a good night’s rest can no longer be taken for granted, as the continued discomfort often disturbs sleep patterns. As a result, the affected individual is unable to recharge for the next day, and is more likely to experience bad moods, increased stress and less motivation to stay physically active. In this way, recurring pain can easily affect some of the most fundamental parts of a person’s health: regular sleep and physical activity.
Aside from the physical toll that chronic pain can have on a person, there are numerous ways that it can negatively impact one’s emotional and social health. Due to the frustration, discouragement, anxiety and anger caused by chronic pain, it is not uncommon for someone who experiences it to also suffer from depression. To make matters worse, the symptoms of depression can actually exacerbate chronic pain, compounding a person’s lack of motivation to engage in positive activities that could improve their outlook on their situation. With an increased sense of isolation from family members, jobs and once-beloved activities, someone who deals with chronic pain is susceptible to feeling hopeless and falling victim to various mental health concerns, depression chief among them.
When considering how to treat chronic pain, it may be tempting to assume that traditional medicine is the best option to relieve symptoms. However, the use of traditional medicine to handle chronic pain comes with many risks, not the least of which are the chance of addiction to prescribed pain medication, as well as the negative side effects of one’s pain prescription.
As has been widely reported within recent years, addiction to pain medication -- specifically those containing opioids -- is an overwhelming issue claiming many people’s lives around the world. Johns Hopkins Medicine warns that painkillers (particularly those containing opioids, a.k.a oxycodone, codeine and morphine) are especially likely to negatively affect women, who are more likely to be prescribed painkillers than men. In fact, the medical group reports that between 1990 and 2010, the death rate from prescription drug overdoses went up 400% in women, while it increased 265% in men. Johns Hopkins professional Alexis Hammond even cites studies that have linked long-term opioid use with increased pain, which would create a vicious cycle favoring medication dependency.
In addition to these concerns, there is no shortage of side effects when it comes to the use of traditional pain medication. Notably, the extended use of pain medication to relieve chronic pain can lead to nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, confusion, depression and more, as cited by the Center for Disease Control. This non-comprehensive list gives a sense of the seriousness of the potential side effects caused by traditional pain medication. For these reasons and more, it is worthwhile to explore other “non-traditional” pain-relieving solutions.
One such non-traditional solution for chronic pain is CBD, or cannabidiol. Various CBD products -- specifically CBD oil -- can be used to ease chronic pain as well as stress and anxiety. When examining CBD as a treatment for chronic pain, a study cited by Harvard Medical School showed that CBD reduces inflammatory and neuropathic pain, which are two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat. While research on the effects of CBD on chronic pain are ongoing, various studies have substantiated the correlation between its use and chronic pain relief. Other benefits of CBD include reduced anxiety and treatment of seizures in children.
CBD is effective in treating chronic pain because of its interaction with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS exists in each of us and functions naturally regardless of a person’s use -- or lack of use -- of CBD or cannabis. Experts say that the ECS plays a role in sleep, mood, appetite, memory and even reproduction and fertility. When CBD interacts with the ECS receptors in the brain and immune system, pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects are produced that can actually reduce chronic pain.
Within the overarching term “chronic pain” there are many different types of discomfort, aches and soreness that people experience on a daily basis. Remarkably, CBD can have a beneficial effect on a wide variety of these types of pain, whether it be related to arthritic, muscular, epileptic pain and more. Because researchers and medical professionals are still in the process of discovering the various benefits of CBD, the following summaries of the pain that CBD can relieve is not comprehensive, and may grow to be more extensive as further studies are completed on this subject.
When it comes to arthritic pain, it’s important to remember that there are more than 100 different kinds of arthritis. While the majority -- if not the entirety -- of people with arthritis experience pain, not everyone will react in the same way to treatments involving CBD products. Some variations of arthritis -- such as rheumatoid arthritis -- are, in fact, best treated with traditional prescription medications for their ability to reduce long-term joint damage and the worsening of the condition. This being said, laboratory and animal studies have shown CBD’s ability to offer pain relief to patients with arthritis. These studies show great promise for CBD’s ability to positively impact those who deal with arthritic pain on a regular basis and are in search of a “non-traditional” pain relief alternative.
Joint and muscle pain are extremely common and can be caused by a number of everyday activities such as intense physical activity, prolonged sitting or standing, or simply aging. Unfortunately, those suffering joint and/or muscle pain may not actively seek a pain relief solution because they see it as a normal part of their everyday routine. The good news is that you don’t have to blindly accept joint and muscle discomfort. Whatever the reason for your joint and/or muscle pain, CBD is a viable alternative to traditional prescription pain relievers. Because of the beneficial interaction between CBD and the ECS that was mentioned in previous sections, joint and muscle pain can be reduced with CBD.
Some of the most powerful instances of CBD use to reduce pain have been in cases of epilepsy. For instance, children with rare and difficult to treat Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) typically suffer severe seizures and even impaired cognitive function. The use of CBD has been groundbreaking to minimize and even eliminate the occurrence of seizures in affected patients, whereas traditional medications have been unable to do so. For this reason, the FDA approved the drug Epidiolex in 2018 so that those suffering similarly intense and unbearable seizures could experience the relief of CBD.
Because of CBD’s anti-inflammatory and analgesic -- or pain-relieving -- properties, it may prove to be useful in lessening the effects of headaches and migraines. Additionally, those experiencing joint and muscle pain associated with migraines could benefit from CBD products, the American Migraine Foundation reports. Doctors even state that CBD could reduce or prevent nausea and vomiting caused by migraines. As with many other conditions, the results of CBD use will vary from person to person based on specific symptoms and reactions.
Related to muscular soreness, back pain is a common source of discomfort for many adults. Again, the causes of such pain can be attributed to habitual actions such as sitting at a desk all day with less-than-ideal posture, or perhaps a muscle sprain which can feel crippling. Back pain can also indicate serious issues like a bulging disc or sciatica -- the compression or pinching of the sciatic nerve. When used in a topical form, CBD is highly effective in reducing back pain and discomfort.

While CBD products are well-known to help boost mental acuity, reduce pain and anxiety, it can be difficult to trust these products are being grown and manufactured in a safe environment.
The introduction of certified organic CBD products to the market has been a rallying cry for many individuals who have seen the benefits of CBD firsthand. With organic certification comes an array of benefits for consumers, including full transparency in the production process and elimination of unnatural growth support through genetic modification or pesticides.
This rigorous program has only been undertaken by a few CBD farmers and distributors due to the exacting standards used to grow hemp and manufacture organic CBD products.
Organic food products have experienced a rapid growth spurt over the past several years, with Americans becoming more conscious of the ingredients and processes used in the production of food and wellness products. This demand for health-conscious food and drinks is expected to continue to accelerate as consumers have more time to consider the environmental impact of their buying decisions.
CBD works by helping maintain the internal balance of your endocannabinoid system, which impacts everything from your sleep cycle, metabolism, mood and cardiovascular systems. While your body naturally produces many of the chemicals that are found in CBD as extracted from hemp, organic CBD products offer a boost that can help your body overcome some of life's daily challenges.
Buying certified organic CBD is particularly important for consumers, helping to differentiate between the endless supply of CBD products that are flooding the market. Consumers that are skeptical of the hemp or CBD buying experience gain an added level of confidence from the organic certification, trusting that both the consistency and the quality of the products they are buying are closely monitored and regulated.
CBD has been shown to support wellness in a variety of ways, through reduced stress and anxiety, elimination of chronic pain, alleviating sleep problems and enhancing the ability to focus and be productive throughout your day.
Vegan organic CBD gummies are one of the many ways to ingest organic CBD to help alleviate feelings of anxiety or day-to-day stress. These bite-sized treats include hemp oil extract and are a friendly option for first-time CBD users.
Inflammation can have an extremely damaging effect on many of your body's critical systems. Organic CBD products have been shown to reduce inflammation, allowing you to enjoy a more productive day by helping to improve your overall wellness.
Millions of Americans suffer from chronic pain, which can devastate your ability to work, enjoy family time and live your life. With organic CBD isolate, even the toughest pain is alleviated, with relief provided by the powerful balance of natural ingredients that are found in these elixirs.
Hundreds of emails, social media updates, ads, blogs and streaming radio -- where does it all end? It can be a challenge to stay present in your day and pay attention to what matters most. With organic CBD beverage enhancers, you're able to stay focused on what matters most.
It's easy to get halfway through your day and wonder where you're going to find the energy to get everything accomplished. From hectic work schedules to family obligations, we are busier than ever -- and days are not getting any longer! Organic CBD energy beverage enhancers help provide the added boost you need.
Our furry friends help keep us calm and centered, but what happens when your pet is experiencing anxiety? Organic CBD pet tinctures are manufactured from locally-grown hemp and can provide relief from inflammation, allergies, joint pain and digestive issues.
Organic certification doesn't come easily, requiring dedication and a focus on quality and consistency for each product throughout the production lifecycle. Organic hemp for certified organic CBD products is often locally farmed in small batches.
This helps maintain strict standards, ensuring that the hemp doesn't come in contact with pesticides and that the production facilities are clean and well-maintained. This level of transparency extends to the hemp itself, where certified organic growers ensure that the hemp is not genetically modified (non-GMO), vegan and fully tested in third-party laboratories.
There are only a handful of certified organic hemp farms in the U.S., which easily justifies the small difference in price between industrially-manufactured CBD products and true organically grown products. CBD products that are made from organic hemp are monitored closely throughout the production lifecycle, where small batches of hemp are passionately grown by local farms in nutrient-rich soil. This sustainable practice allows farmers to take full advantage of the abundance provided by nature, resulting in a medicinally-rich CBD product.
This added effort leads to certified organic CBD oils, tinctures, edibles, water and pet products that are extremely consistent in terms of quality. Non-organic hemp may or may not be genetically modified and could be grown using unnatural pesticides or other biologics that are intended to boost production and increase the speed of plant growth. This could potentially result in CBD products that lack consistency or efficacy, offering fewer natural benefits than CBD products created from organically grown hemp.
As a medicinal product, hemp has been used for various cultures for generations. While it has only been recently introduced to the American public, the benefits of locally sourced, vegan, organic CBD products are difficult to ignore. Bringing together the latest in manufacturing technology with age-old organic farming principles allows an elite group of organic hemp providers to offer high-quality organic CBD products that you can trust.
]]>Nervousness is not an uncommon feeling to experience in the body. Several factors contribute to nervousness, such as fear, anxiety, social skills, and past experiences. Unfortunately, when nervousness goes untreated, it can lead to life-threatening issues, which include insomnia, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Essentially, it is necessary to determine helpful techniques to help you combat nervousness, so you can experience your full potential in every aspect of life. Here are a few amazing tips to help reduce overall levels of nervousness in the body.
Deep Breathing Meditation
Recent studies have found that meditation combined with deep breathing is an excellent way to help reduce overall levels of nervousness in the body. Meditation is an astounding technique that allows you to free your mind and focus on the factors that are currently clouding your mind. Practicing meditation gives a person the chance to solve conflicts, calm down, relax, or simply just remain in the mood of peace for the next hour. All in all, adding meditation to your daily routine is a great de-stressing technique to try on hectic days. Furthermore, combining deep breathing techniques to your meditation practices helps improve the body physically and mentally. Studies indicate that deep breathing is an excellent way to improve oxygen levels in the body. Once oxygen levels increase, this has been shown to help relax and calm the body down, thus reducing overall nervousness.
Talk to a Loved One
Equally important, it is never a bad idea to talk to a loved one when you are experiencing high levels of nervousness in the body. Sometimes in life, we just need someone that we can talk to and depend on in a stressful moment. The mind has the tendency to get clouded, which gets to be overwhelming for anyone. For this reason, talking to a loved one is an excellent way to help relax and calm down any jitters you may be feeling at the moment.
Take a Break
Lastly, it is necessary to always remember to take a break when deemed necessary. Taking a break is an excellent way to help free the mind and relax the body. Don’t hesitate to spend time practicing your favorite hobbies, visiting family, or hanging out with loved ones. Ultimately, this technique is an excellent way to help lower cortisol levels and release happy hormones, thus minimizing overall nervousness within the body.
]]>Staying focused throughout the day can be quite challenging at times. For this reason, it is essential to follow helpful techniques and methods that help boost your focus. At the same time, it is critical to eliminate bad factors and lifestyle patterns that contribute to fatigue throughout the day. Studies have found that diet, lack of exercise, and unhealthy phone usage contributes to fatigue. Here are a few tips on how to boost your focus throughout the day:
Exercise in the Morning
Studies suggest that exercise is a great way to boost focus levels, especially in the morning. It is not uncommon for a person to feel fatigued in the morning. Unfortunately, when this happens, this leads to fatigue before starting your workday, which makes an impact on your performance for the day. To avoid this from occurring, exercising before getting to your daily tasks is proven to boost focus levels. Simple exercises such as walking, jogging, or swimming is an amazing way to increase oxygen and overall blood flow in the body. Once blood and oxygen are pumped into different areas, this helps improve overall energy, thus improving focus in the early morning.
Eat a Light Breakfast
Equally important, studies have found that diet plays a major role when it comes to improving focus. Although breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day, it is necessary to make sure you are eating a meal filled with nutrients and minerals. Eating heavy foods in the morning has been shown to increase fatigue levels, which ultimately impacts a person’s focus. For this reason, it is vital to make proper changes to your morning diet. Studies indicate that foods such as almonds, yogurt, eggs, oatmeal, and fruits are great options to help boost your focus in the morning. Furthermore, aim to add nutritious snacks into your diet as well. Adding snacks such as nuts, kale chips, cheese, and peanut butter are great options to help boost your energy throughout the day. Altogether, correcting your diet is an excellent way to help decrease fatigue and improve your overall focus.
Eliminate Distractions
Lastly, it is vital to eliminate unnecessary distractions from your environment throughout the day. Research indicates that excessive amounts of screen-time cause headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Additionally, distractions such as phone calls and texts may prolong your overall workday. Ultimately, these factors may impact a person’s overall focus during the day. By limiting your screen-time and reducing nearby distractions, this helps boost your focus, which helps enhance your performance in the workplace or classroom.
]]>Restlessness is a tough thing to cope with entirely. Over time, those long sleepless nights begin to take a major toll on the body. Often when the body is restless, this leads to poor performance, fatigue, discomfort, and irritation.
Studies suggest that several factors contribute to restlessness such as diet, stress, and excessive inflammation. When left untreated, restlessness contributes to health conditions such as high blood pressure, anxiety, heart disease, and stroke. It is necessary to find helpful ways to reduce overall levels of restlessness in the body. Here are a few tips to help you kiss restlessness goodbye for good.
Aromatherapy
Studies have found that aromatherapy is an excellent way to help combat restlessness in the body. Aromatherapy can be described as a holistic healing treatment that helps promote a person’s overall mental and physical health. Incorporating aromatherapy practices into your nighttime routine has been shown to help reduce levels of restlessness in the body.
Aromatherapy is based on the purpose of using smells to help ease the body. Studies have found that scents such as lavender and chamomile have soothing properties that help reduce unwanted tension in the body. Altogether, ending the night with aromatherapy helps place the body in a state of relaxation to encourage sleep.
Meditation
Equally important, studies suggest that meditation is an astounding way to help reduce restlessness in the body. If a person is feeling stressed or overwhelmed, meditating helps to ease the mind and free the soul. When practicing meditation, a person must release their tension, which over time helps ease pressure within the muscles.
In the initial stages of meditation, it is necessary to devote your full-time towards learning the ropes of this practice. Meditation requires a noise-free environment with very limited distractions; this way, your body, and mind can fully get in tune to help promote overall comfort.
CBD
Studies have shown that there are several health benefits of using CBD. When feeling restless, recent studies have found that CBD helps reduce sleeplessness in the body. Whether administered to the skin or consumed orally, CBD has been shown to help reduce muscle tension in the body. Ultimately, to achieve a good night’s sleep, the body needs to be able to relax. One the body becomes less tensed, this makes it easier for the mind to fall into the state of relaxation, thus promoting a good night’s rest.
]]>Joint inflammation leaves the body feeling achy and sore. When left untreated, joint inflammation causes discomfort, swelling, redness, and excessive tension within the muscle tissues. Studies have shown that causes of joint inflammation include diet, high-intensity exercises, stress, and sleeplessness. Additionally, poor lifestyle factors also contribute to joint inflammation in the body. Using helpful methods to tackle joint inflammation will help relieve unwanted tension from your body. Here are a few tips to help reduce joint inflammation in the body:
Warm-up and Cool Down Stretches
Stretching is a vital part of the exercise. Studies have shown that stretching before exercise helps improve a person’s flexibility and range of motion. Also, stretching has been shown to help improve overall performance during exercise. When a person forgets to stretch before exercising, this opens the door for injuries, strains, and cramps throughout your exercise routines. Furthermore, when the body is not stretched properly, this contributes to sores and inflammation within the muscle tissues. For this reason, it is necessary to implement warm-ups and cool-downs to your exercise routines. Static and dynamic stretches are an excellent way to stretch the body before exercising. Studies have found that static and dynamic stretches help increase the body’s heart rate and circulation. When this occurs, blood flow increases throughout the body, which prevents inflammation from developing in the muscle tissues. Don’t forget to layer in a topical that can have an impact on managing the general aches and pains of physical activity. The CBD Organics Pain Cream is the perfect way to release soreness after any level of workout.
Practice Cross-Training
Equally important, cross-training is a great way to help reduce joint inflammation in the body. When the body is overworked, this leads to soreness and excessive inflammation in the muscle tissues. For this reason, it is necessary to practice different types of exercises, instead of performing at high-intensity every day. Great ways to incorporate cross-training in your workouts is by switching out your workouts every other day to help properly rest your body to prevent overworking the muscle groups. On your rest days, you can try to do yoga, cycling, or swimming to help reduce overall joint inflammation in the body.
Make Dietary Changes
Lastly, it is critical to make the necessary diet changes in your lifestyle to avoid joint inflammation. Studies have found that foods that are unprocessed and high in sugar, sodium, artificial ingredients, and trans fat have been shown to contribute to inflammation in the body. A great way to reduce inflammation is by adding leafy vegetables, beans, nuts, eggs, and salmon to your diet. Making these changes will help reduce levels of inflammation in the body to minimize overall discomfort and place the body at ease.
]]>Although the origin of this particular viral strain has recently come into question, what we do know is that COVID-19 is a new strain of coronavirus, a family of viruses that include other upper respiratory infections like MERS and SARS. Coronaviruses have existed for thousands of years and are common among humans and many animal species. Common symptoms include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath.
As of now, there is no official course of action for managing COVID-19 patients. Many people are given antivirals, put on respirators, and subjected to other invasive and possibly dangerous treatment methods. Are there any natural alternatives? Could cannabidiol (CBD) be used to treat and possibly prevent COVID-19? That’s exactly what researchers in Israel are working to discover.
Let me start by saying that, just because no documented evidence exists doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work. That said, there is no published research on the effects of cannabinoids on viral infections, but quite a bit of anecdotal evidence exists. According to Dr. Shawn Meirovici, a naturopathic doctor from Toronto: “The cannabinoids THC and CBD have been shown to have pain-relieving, sleep-inducing, and anti-inflammatory properties. So, on your sick day when you’re wrapped in a blanket cannabis may help reduce body aches, ease inflammation of the airways, and increase relaxation to help you sleep.”
He also suggested that cannabis may also have “antipyretic or fever-reducing properties, due to its ability to suppress the immune system.” There is one thing to take note of though, and that the fact that some preliminary research suggests CBD, and THC, might actually hinder the immune system’s ability to fight certain infections.
It’s well known that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties. However, slightly lesser known is the fact that inflammation is a vital response to infection that isolates affected areas and prevents toxins from spreading throughout the body. Reducing the body’s inflammatory immune response can actually prolong the time that it takes for a pathogen to run its course. The same applies to fevers, they are yet another necessary immune response.
I know this directly contradicts other information regarding CBD and immunity, but this is exactly why more large-scale research is so desperately needed. “The research has been primarily in vitro or in rats; there hasn’t been any studies on humans to date,” added Dr. Meirovici.
InnoCan Pharma, an Israeli company that specializes in developing cannabinoid-based medications has recently formed a partnership with Ramot, the technology transfer arm of Tel Aviv University. Together, they’re working on a novel treatment for COVID-19 using exosomes loaded with CBD (cannabidiol).
Exosomes are small particles that are created when stem cells get multiplied. They can act as “homing missiles” by targeting specific organs that have been damaged. They also play an important role in cell-to-cell communications.
According to a study conducted in 2018, “Exosomes mediate intercellular transfer of functional proteins, lipids, and RNAs. Exosomes and several viruses share similar structural and molecular characteristics. Explanation: It has been documented that viral hijacking exploits the exosomal pathway and mimics cellular protein trafficking.”
“Exosomes released from virus-infected cells contain a variety of viral and host cellular factors that are able to modify recipient host cell responses,” the text continued. “Recent studies have demonstrated that exosomes are crucial components in the pathogenesis of virus infection. Exosomes also allow the host to produce effective immunity against pathogens by activating antiviral mechanisms and transporting antiviral factors between adjacent cells.”
The two groups, led by Professor Daniel Offen who specializes in neuroscience and exosome technology, will collaborate on a novel, exosome-based therapy that targets “central nervous system (CNS) indications and COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus”, they said in a statement.
According to a press release: “CBD-loaded exosomes hold the potential to provide a highly synergistic effect of anti-inflammatory properties and help in the recovery of infected lung cells. When cell healing properties of the exosomes are combined with the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD, it is expected to reach this high synergetic effect, according to InnoCan.
“InnoCan has agreed to fund the research in the aggregate amount of about $450,000 in the first stage. The product will be administered by inhalation, InnoCan said, and will be tested against a variety of lung infections. The research results may also be beneficial to additional treatments for Central Nerve System ( CNS ) indications, such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s Disease.
“The agreement gives InnoCan the option to receive an exclusive global royalty-bearing license to Ramot’s background tech and the research results to allow InnoCan to develop and manufacture this potential treatment for COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses. If InnoCan decides to exercise this option, the two companies have agreed to negotiate the license agreement, according to predefined commercial terms outlined in the agreement.”
A lot of research still needs to be conducted on the use of CBD for COVID-19, and it’s hard to say how soon we will see this put into practice. For a medication to be safe and effective, it needs to be studied very extensively. Trials need to be conducted, first in animal models and then humans, and that can take anywhere from months to years.
For now, we’ll just make sure to keep you updated this story, as well as any studies relating to use the of cannabinoids and viruses.

]]>Pets experience health problems just like humans do. It can be very distressing and upsetting when you have an animal with health complications; they cannot communicate their symptoms to us, and yet doting owners can tell their pet is suffering. It can be hard to deal with such a thing, and vet bills often end up becoming extortionate.
Lately, CBD has been increasingly given to pets for a variety of reasons. By supporting a healthy lifestyle for your pet, you can mitigate the risk of them being excessively uncomfortable. Whether your puppy is over-the-top excitable and needs to calm down a bit, or if you have an old kitty with aching joints, CBD may be an option.
However, any good animal owner needs to check – and double-check – if something is safe before giving it to their pet. Since CBD is already a much-debated topic for humans, it’s logical to wonder whether it is any good for your pets. Today, we will be looking at whether CBD really is safe to give to your pet.
As you probably already know, CBD works in humans by interacting with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system is responsible for influencing a number of different bodily functions, regulating things like mood and stress.
As it turns out, the ECS is present in all mammals. This means that your pet has an endocannabinoid system, too! Because of this, it’s possible that CBD could provide pets with the same benefits that humans glean from it.
In other words, CBD can theoretically be given to your pet because they also have an endocannabinoid system. However, some fundamental differences between humans and animals mean that you have to be careful.
When looking into CBD, it is important to consult trustworthy sources. Of course, the American Kennel Club (AKC) is a pretty reliable source when it comes to your pet, specifically canines.
The AKC reminds us that no formal studies have been carried out on CBD for dogs. However, the Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is currently funding a study into CBD for use in dogs that experience tremors.
It is believed that CBD is quite safe for dogs (and other animals) to consume. This does not mean, however, that you can simply give your pet the CBD oil that you have been using. A properly formulated product for pets is preferred; one that contains no ingredients that might harm your pet.
Furthermore, depending on the size of your pet, they will need a much lower serving size than you have been taking. For example, some folks give 2mg of CBD per kilogram of their pet’s weight. Make sure to calculate this amount before giving your pet CBD.
The possible benefits of CBD for pets basically parallels the list of benefits for humans. In other words, due to similarities in the ECS of humans and other mammals, the effects should be somewhat similar.
Possible Side Effects of CBD for Pets
Side effects can occur with CBD oil, but they tend to be minor. In humans, this is not a big issue because we can simply fix the problem; if you have a dry mouth, you can go and grab a glass of water from the kitchen.
Our pets can’t verbally communicate to us when something feels wrong, and therefore we must be extra vigilant. The side effects of CBD for pets may include:
Of course, these side effects are not typically serious. However, it can be worth recording what signs you notice after giving your pet CBD so that if anything happens, you can explain the situation to your vet in full detail.
When giving CBD to your pet, make sure they have easy access to water nearby in case of dry mouth. Administer it in an environment they are comfortable with, as if they feel dizzy they can become disorientated and stressed.
If you live in California, you’re in luck as this is the only state where veterinarians have been authorized to discuss CBD with their clients. If you live in other states, you will have to be the one to bring up CBD in conversation. Once you have raised the topic, your vet can openly discuss CBD with you and talk about whether it is an appropriate option for your pet.
It is possible that your vet will have absolutely no idea about CBD, so you may want to do your research first so that you can come forward with some conclusions in mind. If your vet is helpful, they might look into it for you.
In short, don’t be afraid to talk to your vet about CBD; at the end of the day, it’s more important that your four-legged friend remains safe, and the only way to do this is to consult a professional before giving CBD to your beloved pet.
In general, it is thought that CBD is safe for pets to consume. When buying CBD for your pet, ensure that the product is THC-free and contains no harmful ingredients. Choose a product that allows for easy dosing, perhaps in a low dose so that you can carefully try out CBD and see how your pet responds.
Where can you get such a product, you may? You are in luck! Here at CBD Organics we have natural, organic, dose-controlled CBD oils for your pet that are sure to help aid whatever may be ailing them :).

]]>As scientists work to stem the tide of antibiotic resistance, the authors of a study believe an ingredient in cannabis could one day form the basis of a new drug.
Antibiotic, or antimicrobial, resistance is where bugs such as bacteria can survive drugs created to kill them, making infections difficult, or impossible, to treat.
Scientists in Australia found cannabidiol—the non-psychoactive ingredient marijuana— killed all the strains of bacteria they tested in a lab, including some which are highly resistant to existing antibiotics.
What’s more, the bacteria did not become resistant to the drug after being exposed for 20 days: the period when bacteria can survive some currently used drugs. The team tested a group of bacteria called Gram-positive: staphylococcus aureus— which causes conditions including the hospital bug MRSA—and streptococcus pneumoniae—which lead to pneumonia—as well as E. faecalis, which can be life-threatening in those with weak immune systems.
The researchers also used the substance in mice, and found in a preliminary study it was effective for treating a skin infection.
Study leader Mark Blaskovich, senior research chemist at the Centre for Superbug Solutions, told Newsweek: “We still don’t know how it works, and it may have a unique mechanism of action given it works against bacteria that have become resistant to other antibiotics, but we still don’t know how.”
“So far, we have only shown it works topically, on the skin surface. To be really useful, it would be good if we could show that it treated systemic infections e.g. pneumonia, or complicated tissue infections, where you have to give it orally or by intravenous dosing. A very preliminary study didn’t show that it works in these more difficult models.”
Addressing the issue of antibiotic resistance more widely, he said the study shows there may be compounds that could be used as antibiotics that haven’t been properly studied, he said.
“The most challenging part [of the study] was getting the correct permits to handle cannabidiol in our laboratories, as the Queensland government regulates who can use/handle it—even though the material we are using is completely synthetic, it falls into this grey area under the definitions of cannabinoids,” he explained.
The findings were presented at the annual conference of the American Society for Microbiology, ASM Microbe 2019 in San Francisco, and have not been published in a peer-reviewed study.
Asked for his advice for those who might see the study as an excuse to ditch regular antibiotics in favor of using cannabis-based home remedies, he responded: “Don’t! Most of what we have shown has been done in test tubes—it needs a lot more work to show it would be useful to treat infections in humans.”
“It would be very dangerous to try to treat a serious infection with cannabidiol instead of one of the tried and tested antibiotics,” he stressed.
Dr. Andrew Edwards, a non-clinical Lecturer in Molecular Microbiology at Imperial College London who was not involved in the research, told Newsweek: “The antibacterial properties of cannabidiol hadn’t been appreciated previously and it’s significant that there appears to be activity against antibiotic-resistant strains.”
“Cannabidiol is already well-characterized in terms of human use,” he said. “This is important because if cannabidiol is found to be effective in treating infection it could be fast-tracked into clinics.”
Critiquing the study, Edwards emphasized the work is in its early stages, and that the substance only works in Gram-positive bacteria.
“It is not effective against Gram-negative bacteria, which are especially difficult to develop new antibiotics for because they have a very selective outer-membrane that prevents most drugs from entering the bacterial cell.”
The work comes as cannabidiol has emerged as a treatment for conditions such as epilepsy and inflammation.
Last month, a separate team of researchers published work showing it could one day be used to treat people addicted to heroin and in turn help tackle the opioid crisis.

]]>Increasingly, consumers are demanding consumables. Edibles, beverages, tinctures, and sublinguals are taking a big bite out of the market. Hungry for more info? Here, 4 experts answer your questions about this growing sector.
Beverages are really hot right now, and within that category mocktails are killing it. Last year in June in California, Colorado, Nevada, and Washington, mocktails accounted for less than $10,000 in sales for the month. However, in June 2019 mocktails came in just under $30,000: 300-percent growth. The biggest losers were brownies, blondies, and cereal bars. While there are some brands in that space that did well, the segment overall saw a 26-percent decline, from $950,000 per month in 2018 to $700,000 per month in June 2019.
As far as companies that are growing like, no pun intended, a weed, Dixie Elixirs and Sunderstorm/Kahna are pushing 50-percent-plus growth during the first half of 2019 thanks to their wide variety of gummies. Fireball, a new brand in the Nevada market, launched this year but has already seen sales of its cinnamon gummies blossom to nearly $100,000 per month.
Consumables in general are growing quickly, especially in California, which is the largest market in the United States and relatively new with adult-use retail.
Year-to-date, the consumables category accounts for 11.3 percent of the market—a bit higher than we see in mature markets like Colorado and Washington. Within consumables, we see subcategories like gummies gaining significant market share with almost 100-percent growth year-to-date versus the same time last year. —Cy Scott, co-founder and CEO, Headset Inc.
What makes a gummy great?
A great gummy is the blend of delicious flavor, perfect consistency, a heady mix of sweet and sour, and fun, vibrant colors. Consistency is a pivotal part of the experience. Gummies must be just right: not too soft, not too tough. Since they take little time to eat, the flavor should be enjoyed longer. This is very difficult to achieve. A great cannabis gummy is all of this plus a consistent experience every time with potency and effect. Consumers want to know what to expect, not have any surprises. We get this with foods at the grocery store, and cannabis shouldn’t be any different. Also, consumers want a rapid onset so they don’t have to wait too long to feel the effects.
The gummy category is so hot right now because it offers something for everybody. We all grew up eating gummies as kids and remember that [experience]. They’re always a reliable go-to, whether as a snack or a sweet treat. Moreover, they are one of the most highly consumed candies in [consumer packaged goods] because they appeal to us as a regular treat—unlike chocolate, which is perceived as more for special occasions.
Also, in recent years gummies have become a popular delivery system for vitamins and cold/flu treatments. This crossover helps consumers look at them as medicine for sleep or pain in the cannabis market, too. —Cameron Clarke, CEO, Sunderstorm
What do dispensary buyers look for in consumables?
Dispensary buyers are looking to diversify with new flavors and product types that will appeal to new cannabis consumers. As the recreational market continues to expand and evolve, we see buyers wanting to offer their customers a wider range of edibles options in more categories while supporting the trusted brands that are building relationships with consumers. Consumables are popular with new cannabis consumers, in particular, due to their approachability, so ensuring that they offer something for everyone is more important than ever, especially with dietary restrictions such as gluten-free, sugar-free, and vegan.
Based on trends, brands that are finding new ways to improve their ingredients are doing well. We are seeing strong growth in the chocolate and beverage subcategories. Companies like Moon and Altai are in the top ten within the chocolate category in California.
Consumers want products that are on-trend, and companies looking for opportunities to go into those segments to help drive new consumer consumption will be successful if they keep that in mind. —Joe Bayern, president, Indus Holdings Inc.
What questions are consumers asking?
In general, consumers are very curious about the category right now. It is like a modern-day gold rush. The closet stoners are starting to come out and try newer ways to consume. They want to know everything—literally, all the details. So, if a budtender is not knowledgeable, it could be a very uncomfortable situation.
First and foremost, consumers are looking for certainty the items they purchase will work the first time. I like to remind the public everyone has his or her own bio-individuality, and what works for the goose might not work for the gander. There are never guarantees in life. Cannabis is no different. Just because a particular item did not work for you does not mean it won’t work for the next person. Consumers need to understand it will always be an experiment when selecting an item they have never tried before.
Also, nice packaging is very important to them—I’d say 70 percent of the selling process. A brand could have low-quality products, but if it is eye-catching and easy to get into it will sell faster than a quality item. Furthermore, if the brand looks appealing, is affordable, and is actually “worth its weight in weed,” it easily becomes a top seller. —Jazziymn West, assistant manager, Captain Jack’s dispensary

]]>Every week, another current or former pro athlete endorses a CBD brand.
]]>Every week, another current or former pro athlete endorses a CBD brand.
The list of CBD endorsers runs the gamut from NBA to NFL to pro golf, young and old, male and female. To name just a few: Rob Gronkowski, Tiki Barber, Carson Palmer, Nate Burleson, and Ricky Williams (all NFL); Greg Norman and Bubba Watson (golf); Paul Pierce, Lamar Odom, Jay Williams, and John Salley (NBA); Riley Cote and Ryan VandenBussche (NHL); Mike Tyson and Nate Diaz (fighters); Kerri Walsh Jennings (volleyball); Ryan Sheckler (skateboarding); and Olympic medalists like Lolo Jones and Amy Van Dyken are all talking up the benefits of CBD. Some of them have launched their own brands, others have signed on as ambassadors of existing brands.
“It’s like a flood gate has opened,” says Olympic hurdler and bobsledder Lolo Jones.
Brightfield Group estimates the CBD industry will hit $5 billion in sales for 2019, an eye-popping (and hard to believe) 706% jump over 2018.
If the athletes who pump CBD are to be believed, it is a miracle drug that can help you sleep better, calm you down, heal your injuries, soothe your aching muscles, and make your dog happier. But the health benefits of CBD are still in contention, and very little definitive data exists that verifies the claims these companies make about their products.
The explosion of CBD has left many consumers confused. “If I was a regular consumer, I would be confused too,” Jones acknowledges.
So, why have the flood gates opened if CBD is still so new and unproven by science?
For Jones, it’s about her sport lifting its ban on the product. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from its list of banned substances in 2018. As a result, Jones says, “Now athletes are trying to find the right CBD from a trustworthy company that they can actually use while they’re training and not fail a drug test.”
“I have done a ton of research on this, and I have tried out different ones,” Jones says, “because I’m a 37-year-old Olympian. I need all the help I can get. When I wake up in the morning, I feel like an 80-year-old sometimes. I’ve aged in dog years.” She also has neck pain, she says, due to whiplash from a bobsled crash.
Former NFL quarterback Carson Palmer sounded a very similar note in an interview with Yahoo Finance last month: “After playing for 15 years I’ve got a lot of aches and pains, a lot of sorenesses, and I’ve also got four young kids I’m chasing around. It’s a product that has helped me continue to be able to play.”
But Palmer cautions consumers: “It’s not a miracle drug. If you have an issue that you need surgery on—like myself, I’m going to need a hip replacement at some point, I’m just not ready to go under the knife and do that hip replacement right now. This product helps my hip. But it is not a miracle drug cure-all.”
As more and more athletes get approached by CBD brands (many of them brand new, unproven brands) they have a lot of choice, but also the risk of endorsing one that fails. “It’s like shoe companies,” Jones says. “You can go get a cheap pair of shoes, but then it’s a nightmare running in them.”
